As has been the case since 2017, the League of Legends World Championship will be split into three sections, the Play-ins stage, the Groups Stage and the Knockout Stage.

With the format for the Play-In stage ever evolving due to COVID-19 and political reasons outside of Riot’s control, here is the format for the Play-In stage.

The 2022 Play-In will divide the 12 participating teams into two groups of six and they will compete in a single round-robin format. Every match will be best-of-one with the top team in each group automatically qualifying for the Groups Stage.

Teams that finish second through fourth will qualify for the Play-In knockout bracket. Teams that finish in second place in both groups will be placed in the final stage of the knockout tournament. The teams that finish in third and fourth place will face off in round one. The winners of those matches will then face off against the second-placed teams. Each series will be a best-of-five and the remaining two teams will qualify for the Group Stage.

Although the community sentiment is to move towards a different format, Riot has stuck to its guns and the traditional group stage format will return in 2022.

16 teams will be divided into four groups of four. Each group is a double round robin with every match being a best-of-one. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals of the Knockouts.

Sticking with the theme of Riot sticking to their guns, the 2022 Worlds Knockout stage will be a single elimination bracket. In the quarter-finals, the first-placed teams from each group will be randomly drawn against the second-placed teams. Every series in the Knockouts will be a best-of-five.

According to Liquidpedia, the Worlds 2022 prize pool will be $2,225,000. This figure will only be the initial prize pool. Every year Riot gives fans the opportunity to increase the prize pool via the Championship skin line which is released every year. Each purchase will be added to the prize pool for Worlds.

This article will be updated as and when Riot releases the details regarding the Worlds 2022 prize pool.
